Sizing Guide

YOUR PERFECT FIT

The Historical Costume Shop Sizing Guide

Every era has its own silhouette. Find your measurements, understand your product's size chart, and choose the fit that works best for you.

Before You Choose Your Size

Our collection includes products from different independent suppliers, and sizing can vary between styles, garments, and manufacturers. Always use the size chart shown on the individual product page as your primary sizing reference. There is no single size chart that applies to every item in our store.

STEP 01

Take Your Measurements

Use a flexible measuring tape over the undergarments you plan to wear with your outfit. Keep the tape comfortably snug without pulling it tight. Stand naturally, and ask someone to help you measure for greater accuracy.

01

Bust

Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape level across your back. Wear a well-fitting bra or the undergarment you intend to wear with the garment.

02

Waist

Measure around your natural waist, usually the narrowest part of your torso. Do not pull your stomach in or compress your body.

03

Hips

Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat, keeping the tape level.

04

Shoulders & Length

For garments where these measurements are listed, follow the product's instructions for shoulder width, sleeve length, torso length, or garment length.

STEP 02

Read the Product's Size Chart

Different suppliers may use different measurements, size labels, and sizing conventions. A size marked S, M, L, XL, or XXL is not guaranteed to match the same label on another product.

1

Open the exact product page

Find the size chart provided for the specific garment or accessory you are considering.

2

Check the measurement units

Confirm whether the chart uses centimeters (cm), inches (in), or another stated unit. Do not assume the units.

3

Match your measurements

Compare your measurements with the chart's corresponding measurements. Check every relevant measurement, not just the letter or number on the size label.

4

Read the fit notes

Look for guidance about fitted, loose, stretch, adjustable, or structured designs, along with any product-specific sizing instructions.

A NOTE ON HISTORICAL SILHOUETTES

Different Garments, Different Fits

Historical-inspired clothing spans a wide range of shapes and construction styles. A flowing Renaissance gown, a fitted Victorian bodice, a structured corset, and a medieval tunic will not fit the body in the same way.

Structured garments may require closer attention to bust, waist, shoulder, or torso measurements. Corsets, stays, and bodices can have specific fit requirements that differ from ordinary dresses or tops. Follow the individual product's instructions, and never assume that your usual clothing size will translate directly.

HELPFUL REMINDERS

Before Placing Your Order

  • Measure yourself rather than relying solely on your usual clothing size.
  • Use the size chart for the exact product you intend to purchase.
  • Check whether the chart lists body measurements or garment measurements.
  • Check the stated measurement units and any product-specific fit notes.
  • Review the product description for stretch, adjustability, or other fit details.
  • If your measurements fall between sizes, follow the product's sizing advice rather than automatically sizing up or down.
